wHY, an architecture firm based out of Los Angeles, facilitated six community design sessions to inform the look, feel and flow of the EPACENTER ARTS facility. When they were hired for the project in 2015, they took time to explore East Palo Alto by bicycle to get a better sense of place, and to talk to many community members before they put pencil to paper.

They also invited the EPACENTER ARTS team to their Venice, CA office to learn more about their process. We visited other arts centers together and had many conversations about the importance of making this new building a special place for East Palo Alto youth and families. Their final design reflects this deep listening and their commitment to a real community design process.
